Cerebral Palsy

Meet Gavin Drysdale, CPISRA Athlete

Gavin Drysdale

Gavin Drysdale is one of 18 athletes from Scotland competing in the CPISRA - Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association World Games in Sant Cugat. Bobath's Communications Assistant, Jill Clark, has asked him a few questions about his part in the competition.

1. What's your name and how old are you?

Hi, I’m Gavin and I am 17.

2. Can you explain what is the CP games?

The World CP Games is organised by CPIRSA (Cerebral Palsy Sports and Recreation Association) is an international multi-sport games for athletes with cerebral palsy. In Sant Cugat, there will be 6 sports (Athletics, Swimming, Boccia, Para Taekwondo, CP Football & Wheelchair Salom).

 3. What sport is it that you do?

I compete in RaceRunning. For those who don’t know, RaceRunning is an athletics event in which participants use a three-wheeled bike with no pedals called a ‘running bike’ to support them to run.

 4. Is it your first time taking  part in the games?

No, this will be my 2nd World CP Games. I competed in the CP World Games in 2015 when it was held in Nottingham. It was the first time the games were held in 10 years after it was held in 2005 in Connecticut.

5. Do you do a lot of training for the games?

I am currently training 5 times a week and will continue to do so in the lead-up to games. I have just finished doing my school exams so it has been hard to balance my training with studying. However, I am glad to be all done and now I can focus fully on my training.

6. How did you get involved with the games?

On both occasions, I have been selected to represent Scotland at the CP World Games by Scottish Disability Sport (SDS), the Scottish CPIRSA member organisation. CPIRSA set minimum qualifying standards for the various events. They are then used by its member organisations to devise a policy for attending. Scotland has used a selection procedure for determining who goes, as has most countries.

Everyone at Bobath wishes Gavin all the best for the CPISRA Games!
