An introduction to the use of switches
Using technology to develop skills in children and adults who have cerebral palsy or similar physical disabilities (Module 1: An introduction to the use of Switches)
Advanced technologies such as eye-gaze, touchscreens and voice recognition have become increasingly refined and available. Despite the development in this area, there are many children and adults for whom these technologies are not appropriate or accessible at a given point in time. For many individuals, the use of a switch/multiple switches can be a key aspect to facilitating their active participation in activities and the world around them.
This is the first of two modules exploring this topic.
Content
This session will address the use of single switches and demonstrate ways in which these can be used with children and adults who have cerebral palsy.
In this session you will learn about
- The wide variety of switches available, their properties and uses (primarily for cause-effect/early level skills)
- How to choose switch(es) to use with the individual(s) you are working with
- Some common glitches and how to problem-solve these
- Things to consider regarding the environment being used (physical, sensory, social)
- Documenting skills
- Other useful resources
The session includes a mixture of presentation, demonstration of items, case examples and practical considerations. Opportunity will be given for questions and discussion.
Who is this suitable for?
This session is suitable for
- newly qualified therapists
- clinicians, education and support staff who are new to working with children or adults who have cerebral palsy and have an interest in this area
Please note, while the case examples used will be individuals who have cerebral palsy, much of the content will be transferrable for those working with individuals who have a different physical impairment.
