Progressing switch skills for engagement and communication
Using technology to develop skills in children and adults who have cerebral palsy or similar physical disabilities
(Module 2: Progressing switch skills for engagement and communication)
Advanced technologies such as eye-gaze, touchscreens and voice recognition have become increasingly refined and available. Despite the development in this area, there are many children and adults for whom these technologies are not appropriate or accessible at a given point in time. For many individuals, the use of a switch/multiple switches can be a key aspect to facilitating their active participation in activities and the world around them.
This is the second of two modules exploring this topic.
Content
This session will explore the use of single switches beyond early level cause-effect, including consideration of switch for scanning.
In this session you will learn about
- Planning for skill development
- Approaches regarding the hierarchy of skill development
- Moving beyond cause-&-effect e.g. how to use switch activities to develop turn-taking, group engagement, access learning, scanning to communicate choices/views and answers
- Other useful resources
The session includes a mixture of presentation, demonstration of items, case examples and practical considerations. Opportunity will be given for questions and discussion.
Who is this suitable for?
This session is suitable for
- Occupational therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists and Education staff
Please note
- While it is not necessary to have attended the 1st of the 2 modules, this session will build upon the content of session 1. Newly qualified staff, or those new to this field, are recommended to have done module 1 first.
- While the case examples used will be individuals who have Cerebral Palsy, much of the content will be transferrable for those working with individuals who have a different physical impairment.
